I have been a practice owner for over 30 years, and for at least the first two decades, I believed that I was constantly striving to do my best but had a sneaking suspicion that something was missing. I educated myself, learned how to take photographs, and literally travelled the world learning from the best minds in Smile Design, Restorative Dentistry and Implant planning.
However, I always felt I could do better in terms of predictability. Most of the time my cases would go well, but every now and again a tooth would chip or a veneer would fracture, and I would feel deflated and have the stress of dealing with a disgruntled or disappointed patient. With hindsight, I would notice something about the case that I hadn't seen or fully understood at the outset.
Gradually, the penny began to drop that full diagnosis is needed for every case. And full diagnosis isn't easy. It takes time and is very difficult to achieve with a live, talking, moving and interrupting patient!
As a technology enthusiast whose practice won several awards for Best Use of Technology even in the late 1990s, I found that the advent of intra-oral scanners and the ability to digitise our patients was a game changer, allowing for study after the patient has left. Combining this with digital smile design, communication skills, and everything I had learned from mentors across the world was where my book "Smile Analysis" and ultimately this programme was born.
